Which is better colostomy or ileostomy?

Are all colostomies permanent?

No, many of them are temporary that is, after a certain period of time, in a second operation, the colon is rejoined and the hole in the abdomen is closed up. These operations are often referred to as two stage procedures. The first operation is a temporary colostomy. The second is an operation to rejoin the colon and close the colostomy. The number of patients who require colostomies has been reduced, thanks to new surgical techniques and materials. Often the doctor is able to perform a one stage operation, bringing together the healthy sections of the colon after the tumor has been removed.

When is a permanent colostomy necessary?

Permanent colostomies are usually necessary when the growth is in the region of the lower rectum. In this case, the rectum is removed and the upper portion of the colon is brought out onto the abdominal wall in the form of a permanent colostomy.

What are temporary colostomies called?

There are several different kinds, each of which requires two-stage operations: double barrel colostomy, transverseloop colostomy, and cecostomy. Each of these requires the temporary use of an appliance outside the body to collect body wastes. Each, however, can later be repaired by the surgeon so that the colon is rejoined and the use of an appliance is no longer necessary.

Is a colostomy always due to cancer?

No. There are about twenty other diseases and conditions which lead to the need for this operation.

What is an ileostomy?

The ileum is a portion of the small intestine. When disease necessitates its removal, an ileostomy is created. This is usually, but not always, a permanent arrangement, depending upon whether the rectum remains healthy or must be removed as well.

What is the difference between a colostomy and an ileostomy? Which is better colostomy or ileostomy?

A person with a colostomy usually has had a portion of the colon and the rectum removed. A person with an ileostomy usually has had the entire colon plus a portion of the small intestine removed as well. The word ostomy means a surgical procedure that creates a stoma (an artificial opening). A person who has had this kind of surgery is known as an ostomate.
