What is a perforated or "busted" ulcer?
This is an emergency situation in which the ulcer has
completely broken through the stomach wall and its
contents are extruded into the abdominal cavity. It is
like a punched out hole in the bottom of a full can, with
the contents pouring out. A perforated ulcer is associated
with severe pain and peritonitis (inflammation).
This can sometimes occur in an individual who has never
before had ulcer symptoms.
